Makawao Forest run
Waihou Spring trail
Departed hotel at 3:15am to drive waaaaaay up to Haleakala, saw an axis deer near Makawao before dawn, up to crater visitor center. Climbed to top, set up tripod, then got chased out by ranger and stationed ourselves on the trail for sunrise. Amazing view, mediocre pictures. Back down the mountain to Makawao, got guava malasadas and macadamia crusted donuts on sticks. Went to Makawao Forest bicycle trails to attempt a 10k run. Turned into 3 miles because it was straight up the mountain, but saw lots of dogs and a nice eucalyptus forest. Back to Makawao and got a gift for mom, went through tiny Makawao history museum. Walked in pine forest at Waihou spring. Lunch from Pukalani Superette (chicken teri bento for Nikki, spam musubi for me). Swam at Ulua Beach, dinner at Threes Bar & Grill for happy hour, some shopping, nice sunset from lanai at hotel.
